'Miniature Paintings' are called so because of their small size, painted on handmade paper with indigenous mineral colours. Gifted to the LD Institute of Indology as the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Collection, is a large group of over 1800 drawings and paintings which were once part of the Abanindranath and Gaganendranath Tagore family collection at Calcutta. The drawings and unfinished paintings representing almost all regional schools of Indian miniature painting from 17th to 19th century. Portraits, animal studies and religious texts with deities are represented in the folios. Perforated drawings on animal skins allows for the study and understanding of the technical and the creative processes of traditional Indian miniature paintings. The main objective to display this century old collection is to understand and appreciate the technical and artistic aspects of miniature painting.
