It is part of an extensive series commissioned by a lady of the Royal house of Basohli, a devotee of Vishnu and herself a poetess who wrote under the pen-name Manaku. It was a common practice for the royal poetesses to write under a pen-name. This miniature belongs to the well-known set of paintings, which has now come to be known as Manaku series.
