Shahajahan on throne with courtiers
It seems that paintings depicting Shahjahan seated on a throne, attended upon by his courtiers, was an often repeated theme. This perticular folio belongs to such series. The emperor's throne could be of hexagonal shape and held on six legs out of which four are visible. Just above the seated emperor, is held an umbrella or chhatra. An attendant holding a morchal or peacock feathers, behind the emperor, completes the entire imperial iconography. A high canopy resting on four poles covers the entire ensemble of the throne, emperor and the chhatra. On the left, the three courtiers stand in the formation of a straight line, whereas on the right, the three young princes remain standing in a courtly convention, where as the artist has created a dramatic situation in the foreground. In between two spear-holding guards a courtier appears to raise his right hand in anger, to which the guard on the left is reacting by extending his left arm towards him. The entire scene is composed on a vast intricately tiled floor of a terrace.
