Chaurpanchasika Verse 38
This verse represents the climax of the poet's utterances praising the nayika's beauty. The text on the top of the painting is verse 38. The poet quotes the acknowledged female characters from Hindu pantheon and mythology as upamana or ideal viz. Parvati, Urvasi and Krsna's Laksmi (according to the words in the verse). However the painter does not take cues from poet's words but has attempted to evolve his own ideal type. The seated Champavati in squatting position holds a mirror in holds a mirror in her left hand placed prominently against the red background. Her right hand is in jnana mudra, which in this case points to something being the 'finest'. Perhaps, the mirror here is supposed to suggest that the reflected image is inferior to the orignal, and it is such original idea that the seated poet is gazing at. His squatting position has been given a slight variation by the painter in the manner the poet holds the loose yogapatta with his left hand. The enclosed empty bed chamber represents the unattainable union as the fate of the lovers.
