The decorative arts encompass objects made with the purpose both utilitarian and ornamental. As such these have been prevalent in all periods of history. Ancient cultures had no division or segregation as every object produced was useful, and many of these were decorated. Modern day tends to categorise these objects under crafts, design, applied arts, to differentiate from the pure arts of painting and sculpture. Decorative arts are often catalogued by technique. The LD collection has bronze lamps, papier mache boxes and decorated metal pots.
