Bronze

With the discovery of hordes of Jaina bronzes at Akota, Vasantgarh and Ghogha, Gujarat received its due place in the map of bronze casting regions of India along with Chola bronzes of Tamil Nadu and Pala bronzes of Eastern India.

Museum is fortunate to have more than 25 exquisite bronzes from these hoards, all representing Jaina icons. Many of them are inscribed and dated between 9th and 13th century. The similarities with the Akota bronzes are striking. The bronze collection also includes Hindu deities from Gujarat such as the 12th century small image of Mahiśāsuramardini and also deities from South India such as Vishnu with Śridevi and Bhudevi, and an outstanding Nataraja.

The museum holds some exquisite Buddhist bronze sculptures from Nepal, Tibet, and Mongolia. On display is a striking Buddha in bhumisparsh mudra, as well as gold gilded image of Manjushri. A large copper plated mandala, associated with Buddhist ritualistic practises is a prominent display.
