Chaurpanchasika Verse 37
The theme of verse 37 is the happy moments spent ar Champavati's residence. The poet wishes if such days would occur again when he may be 'kantasangha', that is, 'his beloved is close beside him'. Together they are enjoying the pleasures of dance and music and chatting with friends. Here, the painter has continued the notion of two divisions of interior and exterior space. The interior space is special for the couple who is seated closest together than depicted in any other painting. The nayaka, instead of seated in squatting posture with knees wrapped by the yogapatta, is now comfortably leaning against a huge patterned bolster. His bent right leg is resting on the left thigh, while Champavati's left arms overlaps his left knee. In the outer pavilion are two seated female musicians placed on one common horizontal mat. One is playng vina and raising her her left fingure suggesting that she is singing i'e' uttering some words or musical notes (svaras), the second one is striking the cymbals held in each hand. The diaphanous odhanis of the seated female characters from sharp angular patterns at the bottom portion of the painting. The floral designs frame the top portion and the right hand side which enhance the richness of the entire configuration.
