Chaurpanchasika Verse 26
A number of symbols are brought into this painting illustrating verse 26 which however does not refer to such symbols. It is possible that the symbols are mentioned by commentators and therefore the painter got the idea of where to delineate them in his pictorialization. He makes the poet Bilhana (or nayaka) stand in a red-colored compartment wearing his princely costume and making an expressive gesture with his two extended hands to convey his agony of separation. In the green colored compartment on the other side, are represented the imageries implied in the words uttered by him. The nayika is the most beautiful among all beauties, is suggested by her raising the finger of her right hand. In her hand, she holds the golden lily which symbolizes her and the open lotus signifies Bilhana. The lovers are given the analogy of these two flowers. Interestingly, as circumstances are against their union, the bed is delineated but it is empty. The loops formed in the bracket above the bed demarcates five shapes filled with red color which are likened with the concept of five-fires (panchagni). Here, this configuration implies the fire of unbearable separation which is expressed by the gesture of Bilhana, presently taken as prisoner.
