Chaurpanchasika Verse 36
The illustrations of such explicit verses of Chaurapanchasika were probably never painted. This perticular painting is the illustration of verse no. 36. In this painting the painter delineated the description that her cheeks were kissed by a group of bees attracted towards the sweet fragrance of her lotus like face. In some ways verse 35 has been clubbed with verse 36, which explains why the painter has contrived the posture of Bilhanafalling at his beloved's feet. It is once again an innovative composition but on ths occasion the painter goes back to the content of the first group of verses. The painter depicts beautiful curvaceous Champavati in standing posture and turning her head in anger. The poet recalls (as in verse 35, but the painter avoided to give pictorial form to it) that he madly sipped the sweet wine of her lips and pressed nails deep on her round breasts. It brought thrills all over her body but she attempted to go away and cried. Verse 36 describes how the poet fell at her feet and pleaded what is the conventional male subterfuge in erotic poetry 'that I am your slave, love me'. The bending slave like posture prostrating on the floor, also has a special aspect of the two-dimentional language, besides appearing quite crooked in contrast to the sinuous web of Champavati's body contours and garment outlines.
