Chaurpanchasika Verse 42
Nayika holding a mirror in her hand seated in the squatting position is repeated here but she is not Champavati. Another seated female image is delineated who is given the label of Champavati and next to her is seated the nayaka without without tying his knees with yogapatta. The couple is seated inside the framed chamber on one single oval mat. Apparently the painter has combined the essence of verse 41 with representation of verse 42. The female image holding the circular mirror represents once again his unforgettable beloved who is compared with the moon in the clear sky. Here she is delineated very starkly against the terra-verte backgroind. Within the enclosed pavilion the poet with his raised right hand and finger in suchi mudra is emphasizing the notion of how Champavati for him signifies the bathing place (tirtha) consisting of water of love and on his part, he is devoted to its god, Kamadeva (makaradhvaja). For attaining this destination he is prepared to give up his present life. Obviously the painter has indicated to the viewer that such a deity is the one holding the mirror, whom the painter has installed on a high pedestal. This pedestal resembling the lateral view of a bed is shaped like the yoni pitha of Siva-linga idols.
