Dev Narayan Phad
Phad is the painted scroll illustrating episodes from the lives of a hero deity along with some prominent related characters. The scrolls are painted in a narrative format which unrolls horizontally. The scrolls are of large dimension: 5 feet in height and varying between 15 feet to 35 feet in length. After unrolling them, they are pegged up to form a backdrop in front of which the performance of singing and dancing takes place while the hero's legend is recited. The scroll is the visual equivalent to the gatha, but it is also the deity's dwelling place. Thus the scroll has a status of a sacred shrine.
