Chinese Copper Coin
The Kushans were a Central-Asian people of Chinese origin. They conquered territory as far as Iran to the West and Benaras to the East, invading the Indo-Greeks of the region (see last post). They thus adopted the currency depictions of the Indo-Greeks.
This coin belongs to Vima Kadphises, better known as the father of Kanishka, the most famous Kushana ruler. This coin is a bronze didrachm (half
the worth of a tetradrachm). Continuing the Indo-Greek tradition, the obverse bears a Greek legend, while the reverse bears a Kharosti legend. Unlike the Indo-Greek coins, however, the ruler on the obverse is depicted in a long coat and tall headgear. Interestingly, we see Siva and Nandi the bull on the reverse.
