Tara Bronze
Tara is the Goddess of mercy, compassion and protection in Vajrayana Buddhism and also understood as a female counterpart to Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. She is recognized as a bodhisattva and the quintessence of enlightenment in Mahayana Buddhism.
Here Tara is seen sitting on a lotus throne. The draperies around the arms and shoulder add a symmetry to the sculpture. Her right hand is stretched outward in the varada mudra, a gesture of granting boons to her devotees and the left hand is in vitarka mudra, a gesture of teaching. Adorned with heavy decorated crown, her expressive eyes and subtle smile add to her aura as a divine mother.
According to popular belief, she came into existence from a tear of Avalokiteshvara, which fell to the ground and formed a lake. Out of its waters rose up a lotus, which, on opening, revealed the Goddess. She is the protectress of navigation and earthly travel, as well as of spiritual travel along the path to enlightenment. She is generally shown with a third eye.
