Folio from Bhakti Ratnavali
The text inscribed on the top of the painting records that it is a folio from a set which illustrates the slokas (verses) of Bhakti Ratnavali. The author of Bhakti Ratnavali was Sri Visnupuri.
The folio is large and of rectangular shape and in horizontal alignment so that enough space is available to accommodate all the required pictorial forms. The high birth and power is represented by a king seated on a throne like seat, whose power is signified by a soldier bowing before him. The soldier in turn signifies manliness. The creative genius of the artist is revealed in devising pairs of two inter-connected individuals. The next pair is to be understood as a yogi who is attended by a disciple, implying also brilliance. The third pair of obvious guru (teacher) and chela (pupil) connotation could also signify knowledge. The crucial imagey of the elephant king whose legs are held in tight grip by the crocodile, is delineated in a pond on the lower right of the horizontal space. The ribs of the emaciated elephant are visible as he raised his trunk in prayer of Visnu, who has just appeared in front of him. Elephant's emaciated body connotes the period of time passed through suDisplayering and prayer. This is surely a depiction of Gajendra-moksa, but this representation is an interesting example of brevity along with a slightly diDisplayerent context having allegorical implications.
