Reverse of Portrait of Mughal Lady ( Probably Maryam - Uz - Zamani, Akbar's christian Wife)
The Mughal artist was equally adept at depicting a full-length figure of a lady with dignity and grace as he could delineated the Mughal emperors and warriors in their masculine virility (as an example, the portrait of Aurangzeb, NCM.364). This representation of a lady covered from head to toe by a white painted gown imparts to her a monumental statuesque quality. The drapery flows down from the small head expands slightly at the drooping curved shoulders but gradually widens as it reaches the button. The fabric of the garment is painted with an all-over pattern of three-petalled flower. The painter has ingeniously drawn in soft outlines, the left hand held against the covered breast and right arm dangling downward, gently holds the handle of a whisk. Her face in profile, she is gazing in concentration. The lotus shaped eye over which is tautly curved eyebrow, the receding forehead, the long nose, the prominent chin, indicate a beautiful royal woman. The entire monumental form exudes an aura of royal power. Mughal artists have delineated beautiful, delicate and sensuous looking queens, princesses and courtesans. But this portrait is an exception. Unfortunately there is no clue to identify this personality. Her serenity and lack of any jewelry (compared with another portrait of a Mughal queen, NCM 358) suggest a spirituality inclined person. Probably, it is the portrait of Maryam-uz-Zamani, Akbar's Christian wife and Jahangiri's mother.
