Nawab Mahabat Khan
A hurriedly inscribed name of Mahabat Khan in Persian script enables us to identify the person represented in the drawing. An Afghani by birth, Mahabat Khan was a mansabdar of 500 in the beginning of Jahangir's reign.
The portrait belongs to such likenesses which were delineated essentially in outlines. The face with light beard is rather finished and so also such other elements of the costume, like head-gear, waist-band and sword. These are the qualities of this skillfill line drawing. The special style of the turban suggests that it might be the one with the jahangir honoured him after successfully defeating and chasing the rebellious Shahjahan in 1623 A.D. The date of the portrait is c. 1630-1640 A.D.
