Chaurpanchasika Verse 32
While illustrating verse no. 32, the painter is quite innovative in the manner he avoids the clear division of interior and exterior space. The symbolic bed chamber has an open roof supported by a conspicuous curved bracket. On the edge of the checkered cover of the bed are placed three cushions in horizontal and lateral view, to create the visual logic of the cushions lying 'on' the bed. In front of the bed is delineated the pair of its legs, one water pot and two platters. The seated pair of the nayaka and nayika are placed again over the upper edge of the oval mats to delineate the same logic, viz., that they aresitting 'on' the mats. Champavati's face is turned away which is the painter's device to portray Bilhana's lament that he will be never able to see her face. The dense black background stands for the night within which nayika's iridescent face (yellow complexion) glows like the moon.
