Bihari Satsai, Mangalacharan
This verse on the painting represents the prayer oDisplayered to Radha the main deity, and also indirectly to Krsna, the protagonists or the hero and the heroine of Bihari Satsai, that is, Bihari's poetic subject matter. The first line has to be understood in the larger context of Hindu philosophy, according to which the present worldly existence is considered as a compulsory punishment every one has to undergo. The meaning of the second line is at two levels. It qualifies furthermore the divinity of Radha whose passing shadow gives pleasure to one who is dark (viz. Krsna). The other level of meaning has to be understood in terms of the colour theory. Krsna's complexion is dark blue, while Radha is golden yellow. When golden yellow overlaps blue colour, the resultant colour turns green. There is a pun or double-meaning (yamaka) in the word harita, which implies experiencing joy as well as the transformation into the green colour.
The two diDisplayerent sections are integrated in one unified space, which is how the total painting appears quite integrated at the first look. For the Radha's shadow falling on Krsna, the painter considers its meaning in terms of their union, thus he has represented them together on a platform canopied by foliage and a prominent tree, which contribute to the atmosphere of the landscape, at the same time demarcate the space of the mundane world on the right.
