Pancha Tantra
Though this painting does not represent a story or one of episodes of Pancha Tantra , but it is equivalent of a worldly wise saying. As we decipher the text it equates the chandala, a lower caste person with daridra, who is a poor or an indigent person. Neither of them understands who can or cannot be a friend (i.e. concerning friendship). The indigent person only keeps seeking alms from others as ordained by the devas (gods). Deva is represented in a boat floating in sky. Probably, the daridra depicted below can be recognized by his dress, facial character, brown complexion and his begging posture, in sharp contrast to the aristocratic apparel of the dhoti clad householder before whom he is bowing. Two seated figures on the upper right are also delineated as humble persons, who are apparently selling something. Being chandala, lower caste persons, no one will accept anything from them as they were considered untouchable.
