Chaurpanchasika Verse 18
The illustrations of such explicit verses of Chaurapanchasika were probably never painted. This perticular painting illustrates verse no. 18.
The composition comprises of two spaces, on the tight structure in which is placed a bed and a pillaow. In the foreground plane are arranged water vessel and a bowl containing pana, the lid of which is lifted. I n the other space the couple is standing against dark grey color suggesting night. However, as indicated in the verse, the diamond lamps project a flood of light, enabling the male lover to satisfy his wish to gaze at the female partner's frontal view. The translator of the stanza has pointed out that the frontal view (sanmukha) comprises of the beautiful beloved's heavy breasts, narrow waist and wide hips. It is at that point that nayika turned away with bashfulness in her eyes. This is the next memory of the poet. The translator has further interpreted that nayika's bashfulness was the reaction after the love-making.
