Ragini Saindhavi
The verse by poet Sirdar (18the century Bhakti poet, who composed in Braja bhāsā) describing the personality of Rāgini Saindhavi.
“Singing its saragam through a poetic rendering at the end of the day in the months of (Śarad) winters is most appropriate for Rāga Saindhavi. Brooding and besieged with anger she has forsaken her family, friends and community; taking on the triśul in her hands she worships Śiva in resentment. Says Sirdar, garbed in new red colored apparel, she endeavors day and night and is bent upon pleasing Kāmadeva. Such encompassing is the personality of Rāga Bhairava’s consort, the adolescent Saindhavi that the world admires and sings praises of.”
Saindhavi is conceived as a sullen and an angry heroine as she is jealous over her husband’s purported attention towards other women. She is in this verse referred to as Bhairava’s consort though she does not figure in the conventional Rāga-Rāgini classification as anyone’s wife. Forlorn, she is depicted all by herself in a small forest clearing; with a triśul in her hand, she walks towards a pañch mukhi Śiva Linga.
Musicians sing this Rāga in the fourth quarter of the day, during the months of summer and not winter as the said verse suggests.
