Virahini nayika with deer
The nāyikā in NCM.228, is standing on both feet as she holds on to the branch of a tree. However, the presence of the tree is implied which she needs to lean against, because of the character of her posture. Thus, in a way all the three female figures are based on the hoary concept of śalabhanjikā. The ancient tree-nymph pair is a fertility symbol and here the connotation will be an inevitable union of the lovers.
