Ram Towed by a boy
This is a very fine drawing of a ram (male sheep), which is unusual.
the motivation to delineate a ram may be due to its symbolic significance. The association of the ram as the vehicle of the dikpāla Agni, and perhaps a special belief in this deity among the hill people, is a plausibility. Agni as a Fire God has a history beginning with the Vedic period. Animals assumed importance among the human communities during the prehistoric Paleolithic and Neolithic stages to emerge as totems for worship. Such totemistic beliefs have survived until today through various rituals and festivals. This drawing may be a part of the exercise of preparing sets of paintings depicting avatāras of Visṇu, various forms of Śiva and Devi, besides, dikpālas and astral (planets) deities.
