Chaurpanchasika Verse 15
The illustrations of such explicit verses of Chaurapanchasika were probably never painted. This perticular painting is the illustration of verse 15.
The artist gives us a discrete suggestion of erotic relation between the nayaka and his beloved. The male figure is almost naked wearing only the small undergarment. His long angarakha is hung on a peg fixed in the wall on the left side of the pavilion. It is a post coitus scene when the nayika is about to get up, the nayaka pulls at her odhani exposing the nail marks on her thigh which she tries to hide. This is recalled by the poet. The painter has delineated the nayika already draped instead of being naked. The nayaka's left hand graps the nayika's odhani who in the menwhile turns her head away clutching her odhani with her left hand. However, the gestures of their right hands (chinha mudra) communicate mutual consent.
