Decorative architrave with peacock motif, Wood carving
Over the years the peacock has been one of the most popular themes of expression in Indian art. Be it adornment on walls, design in textile or ornamentation in jewelry, Indian artists never missed the opportunity to use this motif in its various graceful postures. Among wood carvers too, this bird motif was no exception. Referred to as morli, the delightful bird adorned the Gujarati residences at their protruding joist ends, pillars, capitals, brackets and beams.
