Baramasa - Jetha(May-June)
A solitary word on the top of the margin is scribbled in Devanagari which reads Jetha. This gives a clue to the meaning of the painting. It represents a folio from a Baramasa series of Bundi school and is therefore related to the Bundi Rasikapriya set in the N.C. Mehta Collection. The month Jetha (May-June) is the peak of summer season, charecterized by scorching heat. The usual features of this season as described in Baramasa poetic verses, are not depicted in the painting. However, the key aspect of the month Jetha is to convey the nayaka should follow the advice of the elders, who recommend not to go out of the home in this uncongenial season. Hence, the nayika (or Radha) is pleading with Krsna (as nayaka) with folded hands. He is made comfortable by fanning and is entertained by music, as we have observed above. The entire composition is well-structured in terms of foreground, middle ground and background. The colour scheme of the outdoor scene is very stark and suitable appropriate to evoke the eDisplayect of summer.
