Unmad Lakshana
N.C. Mehta acquired two folios illustrating Mati Ram's verses from Rasaraj painted by Bundelkhand artists and this painting is definately one of that. The first part of the verse in two lines describes the kind of painful emotional state caused during the period of separation from her lover, which incites the nayika to behave in foolish and worthless manner. Such an emotional condition is called unmada. In the longer part of the verse that follows is described the example (udaharana) of this emotional torment. Mati Ram explains through the worthe words of sakhi (female friend), who while looking towards her companion simultaneously points out her hand in thdirecction of nayika. Since the moment Radha encountered Krsna's smiling face, Radha began feeling the torment of separation and her body weight began to wither moment by moment. She has lost the sense of distinction between lifeless object and living beings. This beautiful girl has turned so lovelorn and deluded that she mistakes the thick tamal tree as Krsna himself and tightly embraces the tree trunk. Interestingly the artist has delineated the nayika standing very close to the tree. An age-old motif of the salabhanjika has been turned into imagery for unmada, the frame of mind leading to irrational behaviour according to modern-day psycho-analytical terminology.
