Raga Bhairavi
Introducing the Rāga, the title of the verse mentions that it is presenting a pictorial description (Rāga chitra) of Rāga Bhairava,
“The tender deer skin is his (Bhairava’s) seat and his apparel is as unique as the lion (the lion skin). Sporting a garland of skulls and enormous snakes for wrist bands; singing its saragam (has the power of) can regenerate dry wells (and restore the water level). Says Sirdar, with (the note) dhaivata and its cluster as the Rāga’s graha notes, the wise are known to sing this Rāga in the Śarad ritu –winter months, either early in the morning or at midnight. Three eyed, a luminous forehead and enclosing Gangā on his matted bun, is the persona of Bhairu Rāga.” Poet Sirdar is the composer of this verse as revealed in the text. He is known to be an 18th century Bhakti poet, who composed in Braja bhāsā. His compositions on Rāgamālā are not commonly known and come as a surprise to scholars of Braja bhāsā.
The painting depicts Śiva as Bhairava sitting on deer skin, wearing a garland of skulls and snake armlets, three eyed with the Gangā descending from his matted bun. The tiger seated in the foreground in all probability gestures to the poet’s reference of Śiva’s garments and the flowing fountain is a stylistic and cultural substitute of a rejuvenated well in an aristocratic culture.
